Canada Day is upon us, and we’re excited to celebrate the friendliest country in the world with you!
What is Canada Day?
July 1st, 1867, is the official day when the Constitution Act merged the Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Canada provinces into one country, which then split into Ontario and Quebec. Though Canada was not entirely independent from England until 1982, Canada Day was officially established in 1879 as “Dominion Day.”
Many Canadians who still considered themselves British citizens didn’t necessarily recognize the day until it started catching on at the 50th confederation anniversary in 1917. A bill to rename Dominion Day was put forth in 1946, but because of arguments over what to call the holiday, the bill was stalled.
Fast forward to the 100th anniversary of the nation’s official creation in 1967. Canadian patriotism had grown extensively, and the celebrations of Dominion Day really started catching fire! By this time, a lot of Canadians had already started calling it “Canada Day” (or Fête du Canada), but the name wasn’t officiated until October 1982.
