We’re sure you’re counting down the days until Independence Day just as we are!
Though you probably know all about the holiday and why it’s so special, we decided to give you some word-food just to remind you how much the day means to all Americans.
The History of the Fourth of July
Though it only became an official federal holiday in 1941, the celebration of Independence Day goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. July 2nd, 1776 marks the day that the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence. Two days later, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Since then, the Fourth of July has been celebrated as the birth of American independence.
Did You Know?
John Adams, a member of the five-man committee, believed that July 2nd was actually the appropriate date on which to celebrate the occurrence. He reportedly turned down invitations to appear at the 4th of July events.
Firework Celebrations on Independence Day
The use of fireworks can be traced back to around 2,000 years ago in China. As the years went on, the ingredients for gunpowder and fireworks spread to the West in the 13th century and were first used to celebrate Independence Day in Philadelphia in 1777.
John Adams allegedly said that he hopes this celebration would be marked by “guns, bonfires, and illuminations” for years to come – which it is! Today, millions of dollars are spent importing fireworks to the U.S. from China, and rightly so!
